MUSEUMS OF CASENTINO
When a territory has an ancient and important history as the Casentino, a fine art spread in its churches, a beautiful and impressive architecture as the one of its medieval castles and its Romanesque parish churches, traditional and folkloristic aspects rooted in its villages and people, it is already enough for such territory to be considered a museum or a system of ecomuseums of great interest.
However, starting from these assumptions, the Casentino could not be lacking in museums in the literal sense of the word: museums closely linked to the aspects of this Tuscan valley.
There is the wool museum, situated in the premises of the former Wool Mill of Stia. This company, during the 19th century and until the Second World War, constituted an industrial centre that could offer work to hundreds of people in the High Casentino. In Bibbiena there is the Archaeological Museum of Casentino, which represents the synthesis of several years of passionate and tireless activity of the Casentinese Archaeological Group. La Verna has its own museum that, besides showing sacred art and objects, constitute also a chronological overview of centuries of simple life in the Franciscan Convent.
In Casentino there is also a dense network of ecomuseums, which tell us about the ancient works, the traditions and many other aspects regarding the past of this Tuscan valley. The ecomuseums are housed in the villages, but they can often be located in the small mountain hamlets as well: these are places that once played a not-secondary role for the vally under both the economic and cultural aspect.
This section points out and shows these museums and ecomuseums: places that, each one in its own way, can tell us about the Casentino.
